Holy Cross parishioners were blessed to have Fr. John Oliver come to speak at our Nativity Retreat 2005. His knowledge, meekness and insight were an inspiration to all. We pray these mp3 downloads of his three sessions with us will equally deepen your own knowledge of Christ, the world and those around you.
At the 2005 summer convention of the Antiochian Archdiocese, Dr. Kyriacos Markides delivered a fascinating presentation on Christian Spirituality in the ‘desert tradition’ and how it relates to Orthodox laypersons. From the presentation:
In order to get to God, you go through three different stages. You don’t go there automatically. There are three identifiable stages. The first stage is the stage of purification of the self from egotism. This is the stage of catharsis. That’s the stage where we have to work on in order to develop our self so that the God within and the God without will be recognized in us. So, once we do that through the practices offered within the ecclesia… and the ecclesia as understood through by people like Fr. Maximos is really a spiritual hospital. Its a hospital for the restoration of the soul to its primordial condition…
This mp3 was originally posted on the Antiochian Archdiocese website. Dr. Markides also has a new book available in our online bookstore, Gift of the Desert, speaking to the same subject.
On March 24 2005, His Grace Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokletia gave three lectures at the Annunciation Cathedral in Baltimore, MD, as part of their Lenten Retreat and Centennial celebration.
