St. Nina's Way
The Sisterhood of St. Nina (Jan. 14) will remember our Patroness on her Feast Day by having our very own "St. Nina’s Way". In the modern Republic of Georgia, prayerful processions called "St. Nina’s Way" commemorates the long walk of the young girl who became the spiritual enlightener of a whole nation.
In the fourth century at age 14, St. Nina had a dream in her birthplace in Cappadocia (modern Turkey) that the Theotokos had given her a cross made of vines to call her to be the first to preach the good news of salvation in Christ to the land of Iberia. When she awoke she found the vine cross lying on her chest and began her walk across Turkey and up into Georgia to boldly bring the light of Christ where it had never been heard. Many perils and many miracles followed including the King of Georgia eventually declaring that his whole land should believe in the God of this young girl. Thus she is called ‘Enlightener of Georgia and Equal of the Apostles,’ and her vine cross is venerated in Georgia to this day.
Today young girls with icons of St. Nina are a special feature of the annual Georgian walk, and so it shall be for our own walk on Saturday, January 13th! We invite moms and daughters to meet at the Bazuzi home at 10:00am for an introductory story of St. Nina and then a prayerful walk with the Jesus Prayer and St. Nina’s icons around a lake near their home. We will end with a potluck lunch at the Bazuzi's. Those who feel they cannot make the walk are welcome to stay in the house and join us in prayer till we return for lunch together. Watch for directions to the Bazuzi’s in the Sunday bulletins.
